A Garden in Shades of Rust and Purple / Architecture in Dialogue with a Passion for Nature
Residential | 2021
A Garden for Co-creation: Unlike turnkey products, this project is an open structure. It was composed so that the Owners can continually add new plants and shift the balance between species, finding satisfaction and a breath of fresh air after professional work.
A near-Szczecin project created for people who find daily relaxation in contact with nature and garden work. The challenge was shaping terrain with significant elevation differences and creating a space that – though comprehensively designed – leaves the Owners freedom for further creation.
Key design principles:
- Terraced Structure: We harnessed the sculptural potential of the terrain, dividing it into planes using retaining walls. The higher slopes were secured with architectural concrete modules, while the lower steps were framed with characteristic corten steel flat bars. Corten is a material that loves sun and rain – through the patination process it grows more beautiful with each passing year.
- Material Harmony: The rusty hue of corten perfectly corresponds with the simple, modern form of the building and the composite wood terraces. It is a material that ages beautifully, changing its texture under atmospheric conditions.
- Purple Monochromatism: The plant color scheme is a conscious extension of the steel's tone. Intense shades of red, bordeaux, and pink dominate. The steep slopes are covered with a dense carpet of purple barberries, which will in time create a billowing, colorful surface visible from the most important vantage points of the house.
- Grasses and Movement: The composition is completed by groups of ornamental grasses with plumes in shades of brown and burgundy, which carry the purple thread deep into the garden, adding lightness and dynamism in the wind.
- Year-round Greenery: To ensure the residents enjoy a view of greenery even in winter, clumps of bamboo were planned outside the living room windows, growing from integrated terrace planters. Comfort in this open, wind-exposed space is provided by a modern terrace pergola system.
