Revitalization after twenty years / Szczecin-Pogodno
Residential | 2026
Returning to a project after two decades is a rare opportunity to verify design assumptions across the dimension of time. The garden located in the historic Pogodno district, directly adjacent to Kasprowicza Park, is a mature composition that required only precise maintenance corrections while preserving the original compositional discipline.
Analysis and curatorial actions: The main goal of the work was to reveal the garden's structure, which over the years had naturally become overgrown. We based the modernization process on three pillars:
- Arboristics and sanitary pruning: Specialist formative and sanitary pruning of the old-growth trees was carried out. This allowed the interior of the garden to be brightened and the natural, mature habits of the trees to be exposed – trees which, after 20 years, had become fully-fledged specimen plants.
- Hedge geometry: In accordance with the original design, geometric rigour was restored to the linear isolation plantings. The corrected hedges once again serve as "tamed", architectural frames for the free-form interior vegetation.
- Selection and organization: The removal of self-seeded plants and the reduction of excessively overgrown shrub sections restored the legibility of the visual axes that optically connect the garden with the surrounding park landscape.
- Context and continuation: The garden has retained its unique character, typical of Szczecin's Pogodno district, where private greenery seamlessly corresponds with the urban park fabric. This realization is proof that a well-designed garden structure holds its own over the years, requiring only periodic, professional correction rather than radical changes.
